Very unusual gold pocket watch

An English fine and unusual 18 carat gold open faced lever pocket watch with an enamelled dial, Hallmarked London 1826. Full plate gilt-brass movement, Massey lever escapement, the finely engraved balance cock decorated with a sunflower with a diamond endstone set at its centre, polished steel three-arm balance wheel, unsigned dust cap.
Cloisonné enamel dial with central black foliate panel bordered by pale blue Roman chapter and outer black minute track, rose metal spade and needle hands.
Case with a deep band, a pendant and bow of various flora, the back decorated with engine-turned detail and central monogram in a cartouche, maker’s mark rubbed, possibly EJ, case and movement numbered, movement signed Rob.t Roskell Liverpool.

Cloisonné is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects with coloured material held in place or separated by metal strips or wire, normally of gold. In recent centuries, vitreous enamel has been used, but inlays of cut gemstones, glass and other materials were also used during older periods, indeed, cloisonné enamel very probably began as an easier imitation of cloisonné work using gems. The resulting objects can also be called cloisonné.
