An English 18 carat gold quarter repeating pair cased pocket watch with quarter hour and hour self strike made for the Ottoman market, circa 1790.
Full plate movement, keywind, chain/fusee, four hammers, cylinder escapement, three armed brass balance. White enamel dial.
Outer case decorated with chased four colour gold ornaments and foliage scrolls, pierced around the edge, to back decorated with high relief symbols of war, diamond bezel and thumbpiece. Inner case pierced around the edge and lavishly embellished with floral engraving , bow and crown set with diamonds, rear bell.

Daniel de Saint Leu of Genevan origin (active 1753-1797). He worked in Geneva and London, watchmaker to the Queen in 1765, Saint Leu was renowned for very fine enameled, vari-coloured gold, diamond and precious stones set, repeating clockwatches made for the Turkish and Islamic markets. He also made a magnificent silver mounted clock for the Court of Spain. Although de Saint Leu himself was only active until about 1797, the company continued to make watches under his name for roughly another 15 years.
