A numbered, very interesting and impressive chronometer in the manner of John Arnold, made by John Johnson in London, England, circa 1795. The open faced numbered case was crafted from silver, has a number matching that of the movement and has engine turned on the back. The white enamel dial has black Roman hour numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial at six o’clock with black Arabic numerals and gold hands. The very early and interesting spring detent chronometer movement in the manner of John Arnold is numbered and has a chronometer escapement and a diamond end stone.

The case of this watch has a number matching that of the movement and was definitively made for the movement, but bears no English Hallmarks. The movement shows old signs of repair. The signature clearly shows that it is John Johnson of Gray’s Inn Passage. He took over the business in 1775 after the death of his father Thomas Johnson.
