Silver early quarter repeater

An early, large silver quarter repeating pocket watch from aristocratic property made by John May in London, England, circa 1700. This watch features metal pierced pair cases, the back of the outer case with an aristocratic coat of arms and a band decorated with angel faces, village views, birds and tendrils, the inner case, with a bell, is of similar design, its center decorated with a crown and a monogram referring to nobility. The white enamel dial has Roman hour numerals, an outer minute track, Arabic five minute markers and steel poker & beetle hands. The movement is fitted with a very early verge escapement, a steep fusee and vase pillars.

John May was a Dutch born pocket watch and clockmaker who became a freeman of the Clockmakers’ Company in London in 1692 and died in 1738. He is primarily known for his quality craftsmanship during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
