An early English pair cased quarter repeating verge watch, 18K gold, important watchmaker, John Bushman London, ca. 1720. An 18K gold, protective brass case, covered with tortoiseshell, sound holes, tortoiseshell with hairlines, inner case 18K gold, very fine workmanship, pierced, decorated with birds and rocailles, bell, early English verge movement, signed and numbered, cock with a child portrait, typical for the time 1700-1720, repeating the hours and quarter, very beautifully preserved enamel dial, old hands (one hand gilding completely rubbed off), movement intact, repeater needs overhauling, very famous and well-known watchmaker.

John Bushman (also Buschman or Buschmann) was born in Augsburg in 1661. As Johannes Bushman he married the 23-year-old Mary Wyatt in the Christ Church in London in 1690. In 1692 he was accepted as a brother in the London watchmakers’ guild. As far as is known, Bushman worked until 1725 and is mentioned in literature as a fine watchmaker like Daniel Quare or Thomas Tompion.
