Silver quadruple cased verge by George Clarke

An English oversized key wind quadruple-cased verge pocket watch for the Ottoman market, circa 1774. The watch features three cases: two domed inner cases (later) made of brass, florally engraved and punched design, one with an inscription that reads Algiers April 1904, and an outer case made of silver with tortoiseshell and stud decoration. The silver outer case bears the case maker’s punch mark JA, and one of the two silver inner cases also bears the case maker’s punch mark JA. It boasts an enamel dial adorned with Turkish numerals, beetle and poker hands, and a full plate movement with verge escapement, chain/fusee, and a three-arm brass balance.

Brain Loomes records George Clarke as a clockmaker from 1725 until his death in 1766 in Leadenhall Street, London. Clarke was known for his clocks with Ottoman numerals. He had many wealthy clients in Constantinople and the Ottoman Empire. Many of his watches are in various museums and collections around the world.
