A very fine English triple cased half quarter repeating verge pocket watch with “repoussé” decoration “Temple of the Muses”, circa 1770.
This watch has three cases: a brass and applied shagreen protective case with stud decoration and sound holes; an 18 carat gold à goutte outer case with repoussé ornamentation: “Urania, heavenly muse of astronomy with a celestial globe, Melpomene, singing muse of tragedy with a tragic mask and weapons, Thalia, muse of comedy with a laughing mask, Polyhymnia, muse of sacred hymns, Terpsichore, happily dancing the round dance and a figure with a battle axe“, all are framed by a volute border, an open worked edge with foliate scrolls and flowers on front and back and a large outer hinge; and an 18 carat gold inner case with an open worked edge with engraved foliate scrolls, a cartouche with volute ornamentation and engraved portrait of a lady, below the pendant an engraved temple view and a rear bell. The repetition is activated by pushing the pendant. The dial is enamel with radial Roman hours and Louis XVI gold hands. And the movement is a fine signed firegilt full plate movement, keywind and fine florally engraved, with applied florally engraved and pierced ornaments, a chain/fusee, two hammers, solid round movement pillars, a three arm steel balance, a pierced balance cock with fantasy bird and chatoned diamond endstone on balance.
