Silver pair cased verge watch

A very fine English silver pair-cased pocket watch, circa 1710. Polished, deep back, split bezel, swivel pendant. Silver dial, champlevé with radial Roman numerals, outer minute track with five-minute Arabic numerals on polished oval cartouches. Blued steel beetle and poker hands. Gilt full plate movement with divided vase pillars, fusee and chain, verge escapement, plain steel balance with flat balance spring, single-footed cock with streamers and straight foot, silver regulation dial. Dial and movement signed.

Langley Bradley Apprenticed in 1651, he became a member of the Clockmaker’s Company in 1695 and was Master from 1726 to 1738. A famous watch and clockmaker, he made clocks for St. Paul’s London, circa 1706 and for St. Giles Edinburgh. In 1738 he was appointed keeper of St. Paul’s clock. Watches made by him are in the Sir John Soane Museum and the British Museum.
