Early English pocket watch with champlevé dial
–
An early pocket watch attributed to Joseph Windmills in London, England, circa 1700. The case of this watch, crafted from silver, lacks a protective outer case and bears the maker’s mark MF. The champlevé dial features the English royal coat of arms, an outer track with Arabic five minute numerals, Roman hour numerals and steel hands. The magnificent English movement is fitted with a verge escapement, a very early version of Egyptian pillars, a slightly bevelled cock leg which is decorated with bird motifs and a face with a grimace.
The dial and movement are signed.

Windmills
The history of the Windmills watchmakers in London centers on the partnership of Joseph Windmills (~1640–1723) and his son Thomas Windmills (~1672–1737). They are regarded as some of the finest horologists of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, a period often called the “Golden Age” of British clockmaking.
