Very rare silver oval verge by Richard Masterson

An English silver, gilded brass and steel oval verge pendant watch, circa 1630.
The full plate movement is fire gilt and features a pierced and engraved pinned-on balance cock, plain steel balance, ratchet and click set-up, and early Egyptian pillars with engraved decoration. The dial is highly engraved with floral decorations, red Roman numerals, half and quarter divisions, and a blued steel hand. The silver case is in a matte finish, and the watch features a signature on the back plate of the movement.

Richard Masterson, an English watchmaker, was a member of the Clothmakers’ Guild until his dismissal in 1631. He then joined the Clockmakers Company in 1636 and served as a superintendent from 1637. In 1642, he was appointed as a master and remained active in the Guild until 1648. Masterson passed away in 1653. Thomas Taylor was one of the individuals who received training from Richard Masterson.
