Varicoloured gold verge pocket watch

A very fine and very rare English, large, quarter repeating, 18 Carat varicoloured gold, a pair cased pocket watch, circa 1810. With a tortoiseshell and gilt metal outer protecting case. Made for the Islamic market. Outer: The case is overlaid with tortoiseshell (cracked) and the bezel and the border with gilt sound holes. Second: gold with finely chased vari coloured gold flowers and leaves and centred with an urn of flowers, the edge pierced for sound, bezel decorated to match. Inner: the back is polished, the band engraved with foliate scrolls and pierced for sound. Gilt brass dust cap.

White enamel dial with radial Islamic numerals, outer dot minute divisions and Islamic five minute markers. Gold beetle and poker hands. A gilt brass full plate movement with ring turned cylindrical pillars, fusee and chain, verge escapement, three arm balance, flat balance spring, gilt brass single foot balance cock pierced and engraved with scrolling foliage, silver regulation dial with Islamic numerals, repeating with two polished steel hammers on a bell in the back of the case activated by depressing the pendant, slide on the band for dumb repeating option.

George Prior is recorded as being active between 1809-1822. A watch and clockmaker who often worked for the Turkish and Islamic market, in 1809 he won a silver medal from the Society of Arts for a clock escapement.
