Exceptionally large pocket watch with date
–
An exceptionally large verge clock number 3565, with a mock pendulum and date, made by W. Bairfeild in London, England, circa 1730. The double plain open faced case is made of silver, and the original champlevé dial with a date window has an outer ring with Arabic numerals for the minutes, an inner ring with Roman numerals for the hours and original Poker & Beetle gold hands. The movement has an early English verge escapement with unusual tulip pillars and a magnificent plate with a false pendulum. Dial and movement are signed.

The signature is clearly a deliberate falsification of the watchmaker’s real name, which was very common in England. Presumably, the name of the watchmaker was Barefield.

False pendulum

A mock pendulum is a false pendulum bob attached to the balances of certain timepieces and visible through a slot in the dial or case. It is a device used in watchmaking to simulate the oscillations of a pendulum to test the accuracy of a watch’s timekeeping mechanism.

Signed: Bairfeild, London
