A very fine English hunting cased watch with winding in manner of Nicole Nielsen and duplex escapement, circa 1863.
18 carat gold case in high-grade English quality with Adolphe Nicole case punch. Rare and very fine precision lever movement with patent winding in manner of Nicole Nielsen, duplex escapement, splendid unengraved balance bridge, plate signed and numbered and inscribed “Watchmaker to the Queen“. White signed enamel dial with Roman hours, black outer minute track, unusual subsidiary dial position for the Arabic seconds on “9” and blued steel hands. Matching number on case, movement and dial.

Edward John Dent was a royal watchmaker and founder of the company with the same name. Between 1815 and 1830 he worked with Benjamin Louis Vulliamy and Paul Philipp Barraud. Then he entered into a partnership with John Roger Arnold under the Arnold & Dent company. In August 1829 he won the first prize for his chronometer number 114 at the Seventh Annual Trial of Chronometers.
