Untouched patina
In pocket watch making, untouched patina refers to the natural ageing and oxidization process that occurs on the surface of the watch over time. It adds character and value to vintage timepieces. When it comes to restoring the functionality of a pocket watch while preserving its patina, it can be a delicate balance. Some collectors prefer to leave the patina untouched, as it adds historical and aesthetic value. However, if the watch is not functioning properly, restoration work may be necessary. To preserve the patina while restoring functionality, watchmakers use various techniques. They aim to conserve as much of the original parts and finish as possible. Careful cleaning and polishing can help remove dirt and grime without damaging the patina. The movement may also be repaired or replaced with compatible parts to ensure proper functioning. It’s important to note that restoration work should be done by experienced professionals who specialize in vintage timepieces. They will have the expertise to handle the delicate balance between preserving patina and restoring functionality.
