Gold pocket watch with open face by Breguet student Michele(t)
–
A French technically highly interesting Seconde Morte watch, circa 1822. This watch has an exquisite Breguet-style, 18K pink gold case and a finely reeded band. The watch has a slide to stop the jumping centre seconds, No. 6284, and a signed dome, numbered 8/22, probably dating back to 1822. It has an enamel dial with Breguet-style radial hours, an outer minutes/seconds track, and very fine Breguet hands. The watch’s movement has a cylinder escapement that includes two barrels and independent stoppable centre seconds. Currently, the second-hand device is functional but requires cleaning before use.

Seconde morte, Dead seconds.
A hand that jumps forward when the second has elapsed. Breguet used the expression seconde d’un coup or sudden second. Generally, the jump of a hand is a distinctive feature of a quartz watch. In mechanical watchmaking, this function is a technical feat.
