Gold open faced coin watch
–
A French 18 carat pink gold open faced pocket watch made by Cartier in Paris, circa 1907, ingeniously integrated into a 24 carat yellow gold American 20 U.S. dollar coin. This highly unusual and decorative piece opens by spring release, activated by pressing the crown, which is set with a blue stone cabochon. The combination of pink gold mounts with the yellow gold coin creates a refined two tone effect characteristic of Cartier’s early 20th century craftsmanship. The patinated dial displays Roman numerals for the hours and a chemin de fer (railway) minute track on the outer ring, with Breguet style hand in blued steel. (small missing hour hand). The bezel is engraved with the initials J.R.D. and the date 1907, suggesting this piece was made as a personal gift or a commemorative commission. The case is formed by the coin itself, mounted in an 18 carat pink gold bezel and fitted with a crown set with a blue cabochon stone. The extra flat mechanical movement is numbered.
