An exquisite French 18 carat gold, enamel and gemstone set open faced verge pocket watch with date, circa 1790-1800. Flat full plate movement with a three arm brass balance. White enamel dial, inner Arabic hours, outer minute divisions with Arabic quarter hour numerals, a date track and decorative hands. A translucent cobalt blue guilloché case back decorated with gold paillonnés and a central polychrome enamel scene depicting Venus and Cupid framed by a row of gemstones and the Spanish inscription ata amistad (friendship ties in English). Dial and movement signed.
