Open faced quarter repeating à toc pocket watch by Le Roy
–
A French gold open faced center seconds cylinder watch with a stop slide quarter repeating à toc, circa 1795. It features a gilded full plate movement with a cylinder escapement, a fusee and chain, a decoratively pierced and engraved balance bridge, a polished steel end cap, a silver regulation plate, and two hammers that repeat à toc on blocks mounted to the case band. The backplate and movement are signed Le Roy au Palais Royal, with the backplate numbered. The white enamel dial showcases Arabic numerals, and the outer ring is calibrated for minutes/seconds with Arabic quarter divisions. It also has gold beetle and poker hands, along with a blue steel center seconds. The gold case is plain and polished, featuring a stirrup form pendant. The case bears the maker’s mark JD between two stars punched three times in asymmetrical and circular cartouches and incuse.

The movement operates for only very short intervals. The stopslide function works. The hands move smoothly. The dial has a few circular scratches on the left side but is generally in good condition. The case has been repolished and has light scuffs. There are some indentations on the band and bezel.
