Gold half hunting cased cylinder watch

A very fine and extremely rare, large French, 18K gold Souscription Moyenne à tact pocket watch, circa 1804. A Monsieur Hainguerlot by Breguet, sold to Monsieur Hainguerlot for 1,600 Francs. Ruby cylinder escapement, short gold chain, key and Breguet fitted box. Accompanied by a certificate. The front cover with sunburst engine-turning and twelve touch pieces on the edge, sunburst engine-turned back with a silver arrow, coin-edge band, loose ring pendant.

Detachable polished cuvette with apertures for winding, hand setting, regulating and the dial. White enamel dial, small, eccentric set in the cuvette aperture, radial Roman numerals, outer minute dot divisions. Blued steel spade hands. A gilt brass movement, souscription calibre with central barrel and five-wheel train, ruby cylinder escapement, plain three-arm brass balance, pare-chute fitted to the top pivot, blued steel flat balance spring, blued steel regulator arm with arc terminal. Signed and numbered on the cuvette, case numbered and punched with Tavernier’s mark.

A very similar watch is illustrated in The Art of Breguet, George Daniels, 1974, p. 189, fig. 160a-c. The Hainguerlot Family has owned the chateau of Villandry near Tours. The Hainguerlots became the owners of the Compagnie des Canaux, which owned the rights to the Canal de l’Ourcq and the Canal Saint-Denis.
