Gold open faced repeating verge watch
–
A French 18 carat yellow gold open faced quarter repeating pocket watch made by Barthelet in Besançon, early 19th century. This watch has a key wound mechanical movement with a chased and pierced cock, three arm spiral balance, verge escapement, and advance/delay adjusting disc. It is signed Barthelet à Besançon on the plate. The quarter repeating striking mechanism is triggered by the pendant and operates a two hammer gong chime. The silvered guilloché dial shows Roman numerals for the hours, a minute track, stylised blued steel hands, and a square key winding aperture for the striking mechanism. The round 18 carat yellow gold case has a smooth back, a fluted caseband, and is numbered inside. The watch includes a gilded metal cuvette.
