A fine red gold verge watch, made by Romilly in Paris, France, circa 1780. The open faced case of this watch was crafted from 18 Carat red gold and has a fine engraving, depiction of a cornucopia and a lyre on the back lid. The white enamel dial has black Arabic hour numerals and Breguet steel hands and the movement has a verge escapement.
Dial (with “R”) and movement are signed.

Romilly, also known as Honoré Pons-Alexandre Romilly, was a watchmaker in Paris during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s centuries. He was born in 1758 in the town of Tonbridge, England and received a formal education at a school in Greenwich. Later on, he went to study law at the University of Edinburgh but dropped out to pursue his passion for horology and became known for his exceptional skills and innovations in watchmaking.
