Small pocket watch with corresponding chatelaine by Ferdinand Berthoud

An adorable, small Parisian repoussé spindle pocket watch with four-coloured gold decoration and corresponding gold enamel chatelaine, circa 1780. Accompanied by presentation box.
Full plate movement, chain/fusee, three-arm brass balance, verge escapement. Enamel dial with Roman radial hours, outer minutes track with Arabic five minutes numerals, and gold Louis XV-style hands. 18K gold case, back-side repoussé with four-coloured gold decoration. The two-part chatelaine has an oval enamel miniature of a young lady with a powder wig and flowers in her hair. The back is made of tortoiseshell. Movement signed.

The present watch was made by Ferdinand Berthoud (1727-1807) in Paris after he emigrated from Switzerland in 1747. In Paris, he founded the well-known company “Berthoud à Paris”. In addition to being an excellent watchmaker, Berthoud was the author of several books on the history, theory, and practice of watchmaking.
