Gold watch with enamel scene by Jean Pierre Gregson
–
A fine French gold, enamel, and diamond set open faced cylinder pocket watch, with associated chatelaine, circa 1780. This watch features a gilded cylinder movement with a gilt three-arm balance, signed Gregson à Paris. The enamel dial has Roman numerals, outer Arabic five-minute divisions, an aperture for winding, and gold-stylized hands. The gold case has a polychrome enamel painted scene depicting a winged nymph tending an altar of love adorned with diamonds, seed pearls, and draperies. It also has blue, black, and white enamel-striped bezels. Additionally, it comes with an associated paste-set chatelaine with white and blue enamel panels featuring carved wax scenes. The chatelaine terminates with four pendant chains, two of which have tassels, one has a hard stone fob, and one has a key with a decoratively engraved metal mount. It also includes an associated fitted leather case.

The front bezel enamel has been restored using soft enamel. There are some repairs to the enamel on the back beneath the stem. The dial is in good order; there is a possible repair to the hands, as the hour hand may have been replaced. The watch has seized and cannot be wound. The accompanying chatelain’s ivory panels are dirty and dusty, and there are some shallow dents in places on the gold back panels.
