Gold open faced ruby cylinder watch by Breguet
–
A French gold open faced ruby cylinder, Montre Simple Nouveau Calibre, watch, circa 30 August 1809. The watch has a gilded movement featuring a ruby cylinder escapement, three lateral bridges, a plain flat three arm brass balance, a steel spring, an index regulator with a bimetallic compensation curb, parachute suspension, and a standing barrel. Signed and numbered Breguet No. 674. The white enamel dial showcases Arabic numerals, an outer minute ring, and blued steel moon hands. It is signed Breguet beneath the 6 o’clock position and further signed and numbered with a secret signature beneath the 12 o’clock position, marked Breguet No. 674.

The gold engine turned collared case by Amy Gros features a reeded band, gilt metal cuvette, and a gold pendant and bow. The case back is signed and numbered B. 674 and 226, with indistinct Paris control marks. Accompanied by a Breguet certificate dated January 23, 2020, which notes that this watch was recorded as lost or misplaced on August 30, 1809.

The movement is not functioning, but the balance seems unrestricted. There are a few minor scuffs and scratches present. The dial has light scratches and very slight chipping near the dial securing screw. The case shows signs of polishing, with some wear to the engine turning near the edges of the case back.
–
On his return from exile in 1796, Breguet introduced a new type of movement for simple watches, which were usually of a smaller size and without striking and rarely seen with subsidiary seconds.

Signed: Breguet
