Coach watch with verge escapement

A very fine and rare French, silver pre-balance spring small coach watch with single hand and alarm, circa 1640. The bezel with an engraved ring to secure the crystal, polished back, the band finely pierced and engraved with flowers and foliage, turned and flat pendant with loose ring bow. Gilt brass dial chapter ring with radial Roman numerals and fleur-de-lys half-hour markers, inner silver alarm disc with radial Arabic numerals, fixed gilt brass tulip pointer. Gilt brass tulip hand.

A gilt brass full-plate movement, baluster pillars, fusee with gut line, short four-wheel train, verge escapement, steel two-arm balance wheel without spring, pierced and foliate engraved balance cock with irregular small foot, secured by a pin, blued steel ratchet wheel and click set-up. Alarm train with steel wheels and foliate pierced gilt brass spring barrel, sounding on a bell mounted in the back of the case. Movement signed.
