Watch with French revolutionary – and Gregorian calendar

An absolute rarity verge watch with French revolutionary calendar and Gregorian calendar, made in France, circa 1795. The open faced case of this watch was crafted from silver and has a coined band. The decorative enamel face with multicoloured painting, has two single handed dials in the lower section displaying the revolutionary (decimal)- and the standard time, above it the corresponding 31 days, Gregorian calendar and the calendar with 30 days (revolutionary calendar) and steel hands. The full plate movement features a verge escapement.

Pocket watches from the time of the French Revolution with corresponding dials are generally absolute rarities and sought-after collector’s items, as they were only produced for a very short period of time. An example that combines both calendars and the corresponding dials for displaying the time on one side of the watch is a museum collector’s item. Other examples in this version are unknown, but similar objects have already realised collector’s prices at auctions.
