An important pocket watch in the original box

An extremely important pocket watch with nine complications, original box, made by J. Assmann Deutsche Anker Uhren Fabrik in Glashütte, Germany, circa 1906. This watch features an extremely heavy and extremely high quality à goutte (waterdrop shaped) full hunter case crafted from 18 carat gold.

The original stepped enamel dial features an outer track with 5 minute and second division with red Arabic numerals and black Arabic hour numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock, a display of the days of the month at 3 o’clock, a display of the days of the week in French, a multi tiered register combining months and a leap year cycle or split chronograph functions at 12 o’clock and the original gold hands.
The glazed Glashütte movement is fitted with a lever escapement, a perpetual calendar, moon phase and moon age, a minute repeater and a chronograph with 30 minute counter.
The case and movement bear matching numbers and the dial and movement are signed.

Following the death of Julius Assmann on August 15, 1886, his pocket watchmaking company, J. Assmann Deutsche Anker Uhren Fabrik, continued operating for four more decades, transitioning through family leadership, corporate mergers and eventual liquidation. Julius Assmann’s son, Paul Assmann (1886 – 1911), took over sole management of the company. He had already been a partner in the firm since 1877 after training in Switzerland.
