Silver open faced pocket chronometer

An important, early German silver open faced key wind pocket chronometer made by Friedrich Gutkaes in Dresden, circa 1820. The tiered case with an engine turned back featuring a central floral engraved vacant cartouche, punched with maker’s mark EAH and the cuvette engraved Deutsche Chronometer Hemmung. The signed white enamel regulator dial with eccentric hours at 12 o’clock, subsidiary seconds at 6, outer minute divisions with five minute numerals and blued steel hands. Signed and numbered frosted gilt 4/5 plate movement with a pivoted detent escapement, chain and fusee, top lock, bimetallic chronometer balance with two weights and ten gold screws, free sprung blued balance spring, fine florally engraved balance cock and a gold escape wheel.
