An early German hour striking portable watch with single hand, alarm, wheel balance and stackfreed, circa 1570. Iron, punched full plate movement, iron train, 3 opened barrels, stackfreed, verge escapement, 2 hammers, faceted movement pillars, locking plate with internal teeth for hour striking train, foliot and hog’s bristle. Firegilt dial, applied hour knobs for time reading by night, outer chapter ring with Roman numerals I-XII, inner chapter ring with Arabic hours 13-24, centred florally engraved silver alarm disc and finely cut iron hand. Firegilted brass case, with spoke shaped open work detail showing the hours to the front and central quatrefoil leaf decoration framed by engraved leaf tendrils, the back pierced and boasts engraved floral ornaments with a central flower framed by leaf tendrils, the sides decorated with an open work flower and leaf design, rear bell. Watch in outstanding condition, museum quality.
