Gold hunting cased pocket watch by Uhrenfabrik Union Glashütte

A very fine, large, heavy Glashütte hunting-cased rifleman’s watch – manufactured in quality 1A – for shooting contests, circa 1904. This watch features a polished 14-carat pink gold à goutte case with a glazed movement and a gold dome with presentation engraving. The enamel dial is signed and has Arabic Empire numerals, auxiliary seconds, and gold Louis XV hands. The watch also has a signed 3/4 plate movement, frosted and gilt, with screwed gold chatons, gold screw compensation balance, hand-engraved balance cock, index spring fine adjusting device, gold lever and escape wheel, and a chatoned diamond endstone on balance. The city of Bingen am Rhein presented the award on the occasion of the XX Shooting Championship on July 3-10, 1904.

From July 3rd to 10th, 1904, Bingen hosted the 20th Association shooting event of the Baden State Shooting Club and the Palatinate and Middle Rhine Shooting Federation. The event was held under the protectorate of His Royal Highness, Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse, near the Rhine.
Shooters from different parts of Germany, including Strasbourg, Berlin, Munich, and Cologne, participated in the event. The trophies and prizes awarded were valuable, amounting to more than 700 gold guilders, equivalent to a considerable amount of money today.
