The Thimig family is an old, long-established family in Dresden, Germany, which has well-respected master artisans, mostly glove makers and watchmakers, in all generations and lines. Father August Thimig was a glove maker, and his shop on Schlossstrasse was the most prosperous of its time and branch. He married Pauline Weise, the daughter of the Dresden watchmaker Weise. Seven children from this marriage were born; four stayed alive, Paul, Luise, Hugo and Max. Luise married a manufacturer in Erfurt, Paul became a watchmaker in Dresden like his maternal grandfather, and Max took over the gloves business from his parents. Hugo became an actor, director and theatre director.
Paul Theodor Thimig was born around 1850. He worked as a watchmaker in Dresden and sold large clocks too. He founded his company around 1870 and operated until circa 1915. Thimig first worked in Schlossstrasse 6, near his parents’ house. Already in Schlossstrasse, he applied to be the main representative of Lange & Söhne. He later had his shop at Prager-Strasse 6 and was named purveyor to the royal Saxon court by Her Majesty the Queen’s widow. He was listed in Wilsdruffer-Strasse 14 and recorded as a private watchmaker in Eichstrasse 15, Blasewitz, Dresden. This villa is still preserved.

Meißen is a municipality located 25 km northwest of Dresden in the German state of Saxony. It is the Kreisstadt of the Landkreis Meissen. The settlement was formed at a bend in the Elbe and was first mentioned at the end of the 9th century. A Gothic cathedral arose on the steep castle hill in the thirteenth century, which was embellished in the nineteenth century with two iconic towers. At the end of the fifteenth century, the Albrechtsburg was built next to it, the first castle in Germany that was not built as a fortress, intended as a residence for the dukes of Saxony. In 1710, Johann Friedrich Böttger started in Albrechtsburg with the manufacture of the famous Meissen porcelain, which, more than anything else, has made the name Meissen world famous.
