Extraordinary gold full hunter watch in quality 1A by A. Lange & Söhne

A magnificent, art-historically important and heavy Glashütte hunting-cased pocket watch, manufactured in quality 1A, with chronograph, 30-minute counter, quarter-hour repeater and case decoration, according to Prof. Carl Ludwig Graff, circa 1894. This splendid watch has a large and heavy pink 18K gold and enamel Renaissance-style case, which is decorated on the front with a raised, intertwined monogram within a palmette frieze, the back with a design of engraved palmettes, acanthus leaves, lion heads and floral tendrils, set in a black champlevé enamel frame with a central cartouche and Engraving Johannifest 1894. Enamel dial with Arabic radial hours, outer minutes/seconds track with red Arabic five minutes/seconds numerals, subsidiary dial for the seconds, subsidiary dial for the 30-minute counter, and gold Louis XV-style hands. 3/4 plate movement with two hammers / two gongs and gold screw compensation balance. Featuring an extract from the archives of the Watch Museum Glashütte.–

This watch is a rare piece from A. Lange & Söhne, with only 62-quarter repeater chronographs manufactured. The series includes models with and without a minute register in different types of cases. This model has a case decorated by Professor Graff and features custom initials and engravings. It was sold in 1894 for 1550 Reichsmarks. to JW Kuhlmann in Emmerich.

Professor Carl Ludwig Theodor Graff (1844-1906) was a senior professor and director at the Royal School of Applied Arts in Dresden in 1875. He was also a Privy Councilor. Professor Graff’s designs were the most complex and expensive of all the different case designs made by A. Lange & Söhne. His designs were inspired by Renaissance architecture.
