Gold verge watch attributed to Joseph Wöhrle
–
A German 22 carat gold pair cased quarter repeating repoussé verge watch, circa 1750. This watch features a gilded full plate movement with a decoratively pierced balance cock engraved with flowers and foliage, along with a shell at the neck. It also includes a flat steel balance, fusee and chain, square baluster pillars, and a repeating bell on the inside case back. The watch is bearing the signature Elrhöw, London, with a silver dust cap engraved with London. It features a gold champlevé dial with Roman numerals, an outer Arabic minute ring, blued steel beetle and poker hands, and the centre with banners bearing the signature Elrhöw, London.
–
The watch has two cases. The inner case is made of gold and has detailed piercing and engraving with scrolling foliage and stylized dolphins, as well as a shell at the neck and a mask at the base. It is marked with WI above IDS. The outer gold repoussé case depicts a scene of Venus and Cupid. The bezels are pierced and chased with shell and scrollwork between panels of pierced and engraved foliage, and it is signed beneath the step ML for Martin Langpaur.

Signed: Elrhöw, London
–
The signature on the watch, although signed by Elrhöw, London, appears to be in reverse, suggesting that the watch was made by Joseph Wöhrle from Augsburg.
–
The dial retains good definition, with minor losses to wax infill of numerals. The inner case has some repairs to the pierced decoration, with one visible repair to the side above 2 o’clock. The outer case shows rubbing to the scene, especially to the figures, resulting in some loss of definition. There are a few very fine and small splits to the repoussé and some pin holes, as well as some splits around the thumb piece. The movement is running, but repeating is stiff. Plunging the pendant activates the train, but full pressure has not been applied to see if the watch will strike. There are some scratches and wear to the gilding of the plates.

Signed: Elrhöw, London
