Gold enamel watch with a portrait of Friedrick Wilhelm, the Great Elector
–
A beautiful and unique Swiss/German verge pocket watch featuring a painted enamel portrait on gold, circa 1688-1750.
This exquisite timepiece boasts a full plate brass and steel verge movement crafted in Berlin, Germany, around 1750. The gold case is adorned with a stunning polychrome painted enamel portrait of Friedrick Wilhelm, the Great Elector, created in Geneva, Switzerland, circa 1688.
This watch was made by Johann G. Racine, a Swiss watchmaker who was active in Berlin and recorded in 1748. The case was created by Jean-Pierre Huaud, also known as the younger Huaud, who was a Swiss enameler and lived from 1655 to 1723. The signature on the case, located at the centre below the snap, reads Huaut le puisné pintre de son A. E. a Berlin, which translates to Huaut the Younger, painter to His Highness Elector of Berlin. The back plate of the movement is signed Racine / 110 / Berlin.

The miniature is a portrait of Friedrich Wilhelm, Elector of Brandenburg and Duke of Prussia (1620–1688), known as the Great Elector. It was painted by the Swiss-born enamelist Jean-Pierre Huaud, who worked for a time at the court of the Elector in Berlin. Johann Racine, a watchmaker from Basel, evidently made a new movement for a treasured watchcase.
