Gold and agate verge watch of museum quality
–
An important, museum quality moss agate double case spindle pocket watch with a quarter hour repeater, circa 1750.
Fine full plate movement, key winding, one hammer, chain/worm, spindle escapement, three armed brass balance. Enamel dial with Roman radial hours, outer minutes track with Arabic five minutes numerals, and gold Louis XV style hands. Two cases: Outer case – 18 Carat gold, moss agate, diamond pushers; Inner case – 18 Carat gold, bell. The outer case is covered with moss agate cartouches within the punched rococo gold mountings made of volutes and rocailles. A diamond pusher enables the finely decorated spindle pocket watch with an openwork rim, artfully decorated with engraved volutes and leaf tendrils, as well as a mascaron and the view of a farmstead. Both cases bear French import stamps for gold, which were used from 1893 onwards.
