Deutsche Präzisions Uhrenfabrik Glashütte
The Deutsche Präzisions Uhrenfabrik Glashütte (DPUG) was a significant German watchmaking cooperative founded in 1918. Its history is a pivotal chapter in the evolution of the Saxon watch industry, eventually leading to the creation of the Glashütte Original brand.
Following the economic instability of World War I, the DPUG was registered in November 1918 as a cooperative designed to consolidate local production. In 1921, the factory began marking its pocket watches with the phrase “Original Glashütte” to certify their authenticity and distinguish them from foreign imitations.
In December 1926, the assets of the bankrupt DPUG were used to form two new entities under the leadership of Dr. Ernst Kurtz:
– UROFA (Uhren-Rohwerke-Fabrik Glashütte): Responsible for producing raw
movements and components.
– UFAG (Uhrenfabrik Glashütte AG): Responsible for finishing and assembling the final
watches.
After World War II, these companies were nationalized into the East German conglomerate VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe (GUB) in 1951. Following the reunification of Germany, the GUB was privatized in 1994, officially adopting the historical trademark Glashütte Original as its brand name. Today, the name also lives on through the DUG (Deutsche Uhrenmanufaktur Glashütte), which aims to continue this heritage of affordable precision.
