Silver repeating coach clock in pair cases
–
A very fine German silver pair-cased quarter repeating rococo coach clock with alarm, circa 1760. Full plate movement, lavishly decorated baroque-style pillars, applied scrolls, an intricately ornamented balance cock with engraved mascaron, chain and fusee, two barrels engraved with a geometrical pattern, three hammers, one bell, verge escapement, three-arm brass balance. White enamel dial with Roman hours, Arabic five-minute numerals and a central alarm disc. The heavy outer case is decorated with chased rocailles and volutes and is open-worked around the edge, the inner case with pierced edges for the sound, the back centred with a hand-engraved four-part flower arrangement of rocailles and volute scrolls, a string for the repetition with a filigree ball-shaped bob.

Because of the continental European rococo style of the case decoration and other typical features such as the ornamentation and the design of the movement, it is assumed that this coach clock was made in Friedberg, Germany. Many makers in Friedberg signed their work with names that read backwards or were translated into other languages for marketing reasons. They also often used the labels ‘London’, ‘Augsburg’ or ‘Paris’ in the style of famous makers from these capitals. The name ‘Betical’ unfortunately cannot be identified. The signature ‘Betical London’ is also present on two other verge pocket watches.
