Triple-cased quarter repeater Peter Krenckel

A very fine German gilded brass and gold triple-cased quarter repeating repoussé verge pocket watch, circa 1720. Full plate movement, chain and fusee, two hammers, a verge escapement and three-arm steel balance. White enamel dial with Roman hours, outer minute divisions and Arabic five-minute numerals. The gilded brass outer case is covered with tortoiseshell decorated with studs, the 18 carat gold pierced intermediate case has a repoussé baroque-style volute frame showing a portrait of Diana, patron of the hunters, in the forest, the rim and bezel are open-worked decorated with portrait busts, putti and birds, the pierced and engraved inner case is also made of 18 carat gold and similarly elaborately ornamented with an open-worked rim and engravings of volutes, birds heads and a hunting scene depicting a snake, a deer and two hounds, a bell. Movement signed.

Peter Krenckel was born in 1687 in Hattnau, Germany. He worked as an assistant to Wilhelm Köberle in Eichstätt and married Köberle’s daughter in 1714. Krenckel died in 1730.
