An unusual English gold, enamel and pearl-set centre seconds cylinder pocket watch, circa 1790. Full plate fire gilt movement with fusee and chain, pierced and engraved cock with small chased and engraved bust on the table, diamond endstone, silver regulator disc, plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring, polished steel cylinder and large steel escape wheel. Winding through the signed gold centre seconds dial, subsidiary chapter above the center with Roman numerals for time, matted centre with engraved decoration, blue steel hands. Consular case, the bezels set with a row of large split pearls, cloisonné enamel on the back, black ground with translucent polychrome enamel over engraving forming foliate decoration, button in the pendant to open the sprung front bezel.

Cloisonné is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects with coloured material held in place or separated by metal strips or wire, normally of gold. In recent centuries, vitreous enamel has been used, but inlays of cut gemstones, glass and other materials were also used during older periods, indeed, cloisonné enamel very probably began as an easier imitation of cloisonné work using gems. The resulting objects can also be called cloisonné.
