Ivory open faced watch probably Russian
–
An unusual ivory open faced pocket watch with an ivory link chain in the style of Bronikoff, probably Russian, circa 1890–1899. The watch features a skeletonized ivory movement with a lever escapement and a three-arm balance with a steel spiral spring. The dial is partially skeletonized ivory with an Arabic numeral chapter ring, an outer minute ring, ivory moon hands, and a visible balance on the lower half of the dial. The case has engraved bezels and a band, a plain bow, and lacks crystals. It comes with a matching ivory link chain with a female key.

The movement is not running. There is a hairline crack in the centre of the balance. As for the case and dial, there is some discolouration on the ivory and a crack on the front bezel. The back bezel is loose, and both the front and back crystals are missing.

Bronnikoff, a sculptor with extensive mechanical knowledge, gained fame in the latter half of the 19th century for his expertise in using wood and bone to create charms, decorative objects, and watches. Residing in Vjatka, he was influenced by the town’s climate, which was hot in the summer and extremely cold in the winter. This climate led him to prefer working with wood and bone, as these materials are not as affected by extreme temperature variations.
