Gold hunting cased keyless tourbillon watch by Nonmagnetic Watch Co.
–
A large and fine American gold hunting cased keyless one minute tourbillon watch with chronometer escapement, circa 1890. This timepiece features a damascened nickel movement with an Earnshaw type spring detent chronometer escapement, mounted on a one minute tourbillon carriage with a Grether type III cage. It has a bimetallic compensation balance and an antimagnetic palladium balance spring. The winding mechanism is designed with a wolf’s tooth pattern and is signed Non Magnetic Watch. The off white enamel dial, styled in the Willis type, showcases Roman numerals and a sunken subsidiary seconds display. It is complemented by blued steel spade hands and bears a faded and ghosted signature from Dobson & Sons, located at 200 Piccadilly, London. The case is 18 carat gold, featuring polished covers and a gold polished hinged cuvette. All covers are numbered 103031.

The movement runs but seems to stop intermittently. There are light scuffs and scratches present. A hairline crack on the dial extends from the top of the subseconds dial toward the 12 o’clock position. Since there are no English hallmarks on the case and the dial has a faint English retailer name, the dial may have been replaced. The case shows signs of polishing.

The current watch movement was completed by the Non Magnetic Watch Company, which Charles Ward established. Ward’s company specialized in creating watches featuring antimagnetic components, particularly the antimagnetic palladium balance springs invented by C. A. Paillard. Since its founding in 1886, the company demonstrated a keen interest in producing complicated watches. This particular movement was created for the exhibition, possibly for the 1889 St. Louis Exposition or the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, which included displays from the Non Magnetic Watch Company.
