Large silver pocket chronometer by Delépine

A fine and large French silver pocket chronometer with pivoted detent escapement and helical balance spring, circa 1844. Gilt brass half plate fusee movement with a Louis Berthoud type pivoted detent escapement, two arm compensation balance, cylindrical compensation weights and timing nuts, free sprung blued steel helical spring with terminal curves, ruby endstone, winding square with fusee pipe, cylindrical pillars, signed and engraved Delépine Médaillle d’Argent 1844. The silvered dial features Roman numerals, an outer minute track, large subsidiary seconds, and blued steel spade hands, all signed Fecit Delépine. The silver case has an engine turned back, band, and bezel, with a case maker’s mark L.S. within a diamond cartouche for Léopold Sécheret, and is back numbered 832 S. The silver cuvette has an aperture for winding and is signed and engraved Delépine Médaillle d’Argent 1844.

Movement is in running condition, with some scuffs and scratching on the backplate. The dial has many light scuffs across the surface, and the case is tarnished with some loss of definition in the most exposed areas of the engine turning.

Delépine displayed his work at the 1844 Exposition des Produits de l’Industrie Française and received a silver medal for his efforts.
