A Swiss 18 carat gold open faced pocket watch, circa 1920. Retailed by Tiffany & Co. Presented to Patrick Hayes. Nickel lever movement, 22 jewels, wolf’s tooth winding, oversized bimetallic compensation balance. Gold cuvette with inscription. White enamel dial, Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds, outer minute track and blued steel hands. Case with engraved crest of Cardinal Hayes. Case and movement signed by retailer and maker, dial signed by retailer. With an Extract from the Archives confirming date of sale of December 10th, 1923.

Cardinal Patrick Hayes (1867 – 1938) was a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as the Archbishop of New York from 1919 and was presented with this watch on his elevation to the Cardinalate in 1924. There is an inscription on the cuvette that reads, ‘Patrick Cardinal Hayes from his oversea chaplains on the occasion of his elevation to the sacred college May 1924’.

The present watch with 22 jewels and ‘Extra’ movement is unusual for a non ‘chronometer grade’ caliber and denotes the overall high quality of the watch, a fitting gift for the new Cardinal from his Chaplains.
