Gold repoussé watch with shagreen outer case by James Vick

An English 20 carat gold pair-cased répousse verge pocket watch, circa 1729. Gilded full plate movement, verge escapement, plain flat balance, decoratively pierced and engraved winged balance cock, square baluster pillars, fusee and chain. Gold champlevé dial with Roman numerals, outer Arabic minute chapter, blued steel beetle and poker hands, the centre with banners. Both cases gold, the inner case with shuttered winding aperture, case maker’s mark SG, London hallmarks for 1729, the second case chased with a repoussé scene depicting a seated lady taken by surprise, her dog and an approaching musician, outer gilt shagreen covered case with studded bezel and centre. Dial signed, movement signed and numbered. Comes with an associated short metal chain and later winding key.
