Gold single-handed pendant watch by Johann Khoremann
–
A rare gold and enamel German pre-balance spring verge watch, circa 1680.  The watch features a gilded movement with a verge escapement, a plain steel two-arm balance, a decoratively pierced and floral engraved balance cock and long foot, a worm and wheel set up with a blued steel pointer indicating to a silver plate, a decoratively blued steel bracket and gate, a fusee and chain, cylindrical pillars, and is signed by Johann KhoreMann. The dial has a white enamel chapter ring with Roman numerals and fleur-de-lys half hours between them. The polychrome enamel painted centre depicts a bouquet, and it has a single turned blued steel hand.
–
The gold and enamel case features a polychrome enamel painted scene on the back depicting Queen Alcyone imploring Juno, Protectress of Marriage, to Return her Husband King Ceyx. The case band is chased and enamelled with flowers and foliage in high relief, while the inside case back showcases a polychrome enamel-painted landscape scene with two figures promenading. The inside of the band is in plain turquoise enamel, and there is a restored flower-form chased and enamelled pendant, along with a decoratively engraved gold bezel.

The movement is intermittently running and has some scratches on the plates. The right-hand side of the worm and wheel bracket is missing. The dial is detached and loose, with two feet towards the top—one lacking a securing pin and the other having a securing pin broken within the foot. The foot underneath the dial has broken off and is missing, with a residue of glue on the movement’s top plate where this area of the dial was previously secured. There are hairline cracks on the chapter ring. The case back has some scratches, and the band has some small abrasions, chips, and signs of restoration. The inside scene is well restored with hard enamel. The enamel on the pendant has been restored, and the gold bezel has been restored or possibly replaced.

Johann Khorn[e]mann is listed by J. Abeler in “Meister der Uhrmacherkunst” (1977) as active in Augsburg. During the time this watch was produced, Geneva and Blois were renowned for their decorative enamel cases. The present watch showcases an Augsburgian interpretation of the established styles of these two centres, featuring a scene from Ovid’s Metamorphoses.
Listed in Augsburg circa 1700, full name Johann Georg Khornmann, possibly identical to Johan Khornmann from Austria, who also made pocket watches from 1700, also with Johan Georg Khornmann Friedberg, who made pocket watches of this style around 1720.

Signed: Johann Khoremann, Augsburg
