A sphygmomanometer, also called a blood pressure monitor or gauge, measures blood pressure. It uses an inflatable cuff to control blood flow in the artery and a mercury or aneroid manometer to measure the pressure. Manual sphygmomanometers are used with a stethoscope for the auscultatory technique.

A sphygmomanometer includes an inflatable cuff, a measuring unit such as a mercury manometer or an aneroid gauge, and an inflation mechanism, which can be a manual bulb-and-valve or an electric pump.
