Gold double open faced watch retailed by Schneider & Rothacker
–
A rare German gold double two-train watch with a double movement, double dial, centre seconds, and separate lever escapements, crafted for the Egyptian market, circa 1910. The watch has two frosted gilded movements, each featuring separate barrels and trains integrated into the main plate. Both movements have lever escapement, a bimetallic compensation balance, and tandem winding. The watch has two dials: the European dial is white enamel with Roman numerals, a centre seconds display, an outer ring for seconds/minutes, and blued steel hands. Signed: Schneider & Rothacker. The Turkish dial is also white enamel but with Turkish numerals, an outer minute ring, and blued steel hands.

The case is made of gold, polished, with rounded bezels, inner bezels with concealed regulator index, and engraved with pour le cadran turc and pour le cadran européen, with olivettes on either side of the pendant for adjusting handsets and engraved accordingly with E & T.

The movement is functioning, and both handsets are adjusting. The index arm to the regulator of the European side’s balance cock is broken. The Turkish dial is slightly loose and has hairline cracks at 12, 2, and 6 o’clock. The European dial has been repaired and also has hairline cracks at the edge by 8 o’clock, which is partly concealed by the bezel. The inner bezels are marked for Turkish and European dials, but the corresponding dials are the other way around. However, the hand-setting olivettes are also marked for European and Turkish time settings, and these do correspond to the current position of the dials. The case is in polished condition with some scuffs and scratches.

Schneider and Rothacker were located in Alexandria and Cairo, Egypt. They are referenced in the Commonwealth Gazette of June 22, 1916, in a statement published by the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. The statement lists them, along with other “firms in Egypt with enemy interests,” as being licensed by the Egyptian Government to conduct business solely for the purpose of liquidation.

Signed: Schneider & Rothacker
