Silver, gilded brass, blued steel verge watch by Denis Bordier

A superb and rare Swiss verge pendant watch in the shape of a scallop, circa 1650. The movement of the full plate in the watch is made of gilded brass and partly blued steel, with a pierced balance cock and a verge escapement. The silver dial is highly engraved and has Roman numerals with half-hour divisions and a floriated steel hand. The watch’s case is in the shape of a silver scallop shell. The watch was made by Denis Bordier, as indicated by his signature on the back plate of the movement.

Denis Bordier was a Geneva watchmaker born in 1629 as the son of the priest Jaques Bordier (1591-1651) and Angélique du Commun (ca 1590-1651). Denis was the brother of Isaac Bordier and Jacob Bordier. Denis married Susanne Buisson in 1657 . Susanne Buisson was a sister of Marie Buisson, who was married to Isaac, Denis’s older brother. Denis and Susanne’s marriage probably gave birth to 5 children. The sons Abraham Bordier, François Bordier and Jacques Bordier became watchmakers. The son Guillaume Bordier. In addition to being a watchmaker, he also became a goldsmith. Denis was also Membre du Conseil des Deux-Cents like his brother Isaac in Geneva. They both worked in a shop called “Les Frères Denis et Isaac Bordier.”
Denis Bordier died on August 18, 1670, in Geneva, aged 79.
