The watch is historically interesting because it may be one of the gifts that gave the Tsar’s family on the occasion of the disaster of 18.5.1896 at the celebration of the coronation of Nicholas II for special merit. The catastrophe at the coronation ceremonies of Emperor Nicholas II was a mass panic that occurred on 18 May 1896 on the Chodynkafeld near Moscow. It killed 1389 people, another 1300 were injured. Wirballen was a Russian border station, which played an important role for the Russian railway at the end of the 19th century, especially for the luxurious North Express. It is quite conceivable that the recipient was a servant of this railway, which was also used by the tsar’s family.
