A large 18 carat gold cylinder watch with repeater, probably made in Switzerland for Eardley Norton in London, England, circa 1820. The numbered, à goutte and open faced cased of this watch was crafted from 18 carat gold and has an engine turned back lid. The white enamel dial has Roman hour numerals and steel hands and the movement features a Swiss cylinder escapement, key winding and an hours and quarter repeater.
The cuvette is signed.

Norton
Eardley Norton was a prominent English watchmaker in the 18th century, active in Clerkenwell, London, from 1762 until his death in 1792. He was known for creating complex, high quality timepieces, including astronomical and musical clocks for both the domestic and export markets. Norton’s business was known for innovative mechanics. After his death, his workshop was taken over by the partnership of Gravell and Tolkien.
